Gavilan, CA – They say the first win of the season is the hardest to get and after three games the Gavilan College Soccer team definitely agreed to that statement. Despite controlling the pace of play and possession all of the first half and most of the second half, the Rams somehow found themselves down a goal with 30 minutes left in the match against Yuba College. Crosses were just out of reach, shots either were blocked or not taken and frustration started to show. That is until the 25 minute when Gavilan scored their first of two goals to win the match in a come from behind 2-1 win.

The first goal came of the foot of freshman Tony Ceja (Los Banos HS) , as he fought between two defenders to chip over the top of the Yuba keeper to even the match at one. The goal seem to energize the Rams as they continued to drive the ball deep into Yuba side of the field, as Yuba continually tried to clear their zone and kill the clock. After a series of misconnects on crosses it looked as though Yuba might be able to kill of the clock and end the match in a tie. Then after a run down the sidelines left winger Rodolfo Rivera (Pacheco HS)  finally connected with Brian Nevarez(Pacheco HS) who made a run down the middle and sliding touch to put the ball in the back of the net. The goal came in the 87th minute. Yuba appeared to be in shock as they were unable to put forth an attack to equalize the game. When the final whistle was blown by the referee, the Rams victory was complete. Defensively it was keeper Jesus Lopez (Pacheco HS) who head coach Ricardo Espinosa credits with keeping the Rams in the game, finished with 10 saves.

Gavilan is now 1-2-1 on the season. They will hit the road for the first time all year to take on Merritt College up in Oakland. The game is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. Go Rams!
