Gavilan, CA – This past weekend saw some ups and down for the athletic programs of Gavilan College. The volleyball team won in straight sets against their former assistant coach Jason Dupler and his San Jose City College squad. Meanwhile, the soccer team and the football team drop their matches against Las Positas and Foothill College.

The second ranked volleyball team won their match against San Jose City by a score of 25-10, 25-6 and 25-14. Lex Chavarria led the Rams in kills with 8 followed by Juice Viray and Katia Dizon who each had 5. Melissa Zanotto had 18 assists while Zoe Harada had 7 digs.   They will host rival Foothill College on Wednesday before a conference showdown with the up and coming Renegades of Ohlone College on Friday up in Fremont.

It was a tall task at hand for the soccer team as they took on Las Positas College, which has yet to lose a game in conference. With a shortened bench, and their starting keeper having to miss the match due to red card accumulation, the Rams took the field with only 10 players.  Alfonso Lopez was in the net for Gavilan and saved 12 of the 17 shots he faced in the 5-0 loss. This week the Rams look to get back on track with a pair of home matches. First they will take on Skyline College on Tuesday then on Friday the will play Cabrillo College. All of matches as scheduled for a 4 p.m. kickoff.

Miscues and miss assignments help contribute to football’s 40-7 loss to Foothill College last Saturday. Corey Garcia continued to excel for the Rams with 5 catches and 104 which included an 8 yard touchdown pass from Jimmy Brechtel.  The defense came up with three turnovers on the day, two forced fumbles by Carlos Lopez and Marqus Marquez and an interception by Donny Torres. Cameron Castro led the team with 9 tackles, one of which was a sack. Tobias Lesui was next with 6 tackles. The Rams will host Reedley College this Saturday at 2 p.m. at Christopher High School.
