Gavilan, CA – The Gavilan College Women’s basketball team started the season far from home, down in southern California, and came away with some unfavorable results. However last night in their home opener, they proved that there is no place like home as they came away with a 77-46 win against Ohlone College.

The Rams got off to a quick start, only to have the Renegades close out the quarter on a run to give the home team a 5 point lead. The second quarter was all Rams, as they ran up and down the floor scoring at will. In fact they outscore Ohlone 24-3, to give them a halftime lead 43-17 and they never looked back from there.

Sophomore Jessica Curto (San Benito H.S.) had a career high 23 points to go with 8 rebounds to lead the Rams. Freshman Mireya Hernandez (Dinuba H.S.) finished with 17 points to go with her 5 steals, freshman Makenzie Barnes (Christopher H.S.) had 9 and off the bench it was Evelyn Rios (Watsonville H.S.) with 8.  The Rams out shot Ohlone 42% to 34%, but the real story was the 33 turnovers forced by the Rams which fueled the second quarter run.

The Rams are now 1-2 on the young season and will spend the next few weeks on the road. They will travel to Ukiah to take on Mendocino College on Saturday before spending the following weekend taking on Copper Mountain College in Joshua Tree and Victor Valley College the next day in Victorville. Go Rams!
