Gavilan College – Last Friday night was a night for celebrations for the Gavilan College Volleyball team. Playing in their last home game of the regular season, the Rams took on Las Positas College and came away with a 3-set sweep by a score of 25-8, 25-13, 25-13.

Before the match started, there was a ceremony to honor the nine sophomore that were playing in their final home match. The class of ’19 has become the winningest class in the history of the volleyball program. They now have a record of 45-9, surpassing the class of ’13 which had 41 wins. Like the ’13 class this current class of Rams also won consecutive Coast Conference South Championships.

Being that it was sophomore night Coach Kevin Kramer only played the sophomore all night long. They were led offensively by Camille Finley who had 9 kills on 11 swings to go with 5 blocks. Juice Viray and Lex Chavarria had 6 kills while Evelyn Clonts, Katia Dizon and Sarah Weiby all had 5. Greysen Gilroy and Weiby both dished out 16 assists. Defensively Katia Dizon had 18 digs followed by Mikeila Banda who had 12 digs. The block total of Finley was only surpassed by Clonts who finished with 8 blocks, one shy of the Gavilan record for blocks in a match which is held by both Clonts and Finley.

There were more than a few milestones achieved by several Rams during the match. Clonts who is already the all-time leader in blocks for Gavilan now has 103 blocks on the season, the first time a Rams has ever reached that mark. Finley is one block away for second place in that same category with 77 blocks and is now 3rd all-time in block for a career with 126. If that wasn't enough, she is now 3rd all-time in aces in a career with 67. Banda has moved into 5th place with 62 aces for a career and her 687 career digs puts her 5th all-time in that category. Gilroy with 630 career assists is now 6th all-time in that category, the two players directly in front of her on that list played when the rules had the teams playing to a score of 30 not the 25 they play to now.

With the win the Rams improve their record to a program historic 27-1 and a perfect 12-0 in conference play. This is the second time the program has gone undefeated in conference play, the first coming in 2016. Gavilan will now wait until Thursday to find out their seed and opponent for the playoffs. What they do know, is they will host at a playoff game on Tuesday November 20th at 7 pm. Go Rams!
