San Jose, Ca – Last season at the San Jose City College Tip-Off Classics, the men’s basketball team put the CCCAA on notice that Gavilan is now a threat, as they went on to win all three games and be named tournament champions. This year Coach Dallas Jensen’s 8th ranked (CCCMBCA Preseason Poll) squad sent out another notice…That they are here to stay.  Three games against the number 18th ranked Foothill College, Merced College and the 11th ranked Chabot College and all three had the same result, a Gavilan win.

The 3-day classic had Gavilan opening up against Foothill College, a team that did not face during last year’s championship season. Foothill got off to go out to a double digit lead early in the first half only to have it disappear midway through the first. However, the Owls would go on to close the half with another run to go up by 10. The second half had both teams going back in forth until about 7 minutes left in the game. That is when the Rams took control of the game and outscored the Owls by 14 in the second half to get a 74-70 win. Sophomore Ibn Zaid (Taft H.S.) was the Rams high scorer with 17 points followed by Patrick Fisher (Bloomington H.S.) who had 16 points coming off the bench. Daylon Potts (Edison H.S.) had a huge game inside the paint as he had 8 points to go with 18 rebounds and 3 blocks.

Game two against Merced on paper was supposed to be the easiest of the three games, but the very athletic Blue Devils came ready to play.  Once again the Rams were down at half only this time by seven. The game stayed close until once again the Rams went on a run. Led by Mrad Abrha’s (Gunderson H.S.) 21 points and big shorts by Kurtis McCoy (Roosevelt H.S.) down the stretch allowed the Rams some breathing room as they came away with a 80-75 win. Potts once again had an all-around game, this time scoring 14 points to go along with 18 rebounds. McCoy finished with 12 points and Deion Ellis (McClymonds) chipped in with 10.

The Rams waited until their final game off the classic to have their best game to of the early season. The match up with the 11th ranked Gladiators was settled before many of the fans go into their seats. It was a 16 to 2 run to start the game for the Rams who never looked back in route to a 37-14 halftime lead. It was more of the same in the second half as Gavilan would score 36 to Chabot’s 27 second half points on way to a 73-41 victory. Eleven different Rams would score, with Ellis’ 21 leading the way. Only one other Ram had double digits scoring as Zaid went for 12. Abrha pulled down 8 rebounds while Potts had 7.

The Rams will look to continue their hot start to the season as they will be back in action on this weekend at the Ohlone Classic up in Fremont. Thursday they will take on Modesto Junior College and then finish with Delta College on Saturday.
