And Just Like That

Rocklin, CA – The day did not go as expected for the Gavilan Beach Volleyball team yesterday. The 5th seed Rams took on the 1st seeded Sierra College and the 3rd seeded Eagles of Feather River College in a round robin match, where the winner would advance to the CCCAA State Championships next week.

The first round had Gavilan taking on host Sierra College in a rematch of a week ago where Sierra won 4-1. Unfortunately for the Rams, it was more of the same. It was another 4-1 loss to the wolverines. The match started with the No.4s and 5 pairs, followed by the 1s, 2s, and 3s.

No. 5 duo of Christa Arroyo and Evelyn Clonts dropped their match 21-14, 21-13. At the same time the No. 4 pair of Lex Chavarria and Jenna Clonts found themselves in a real battle going three sets. They won the first set 22-20, and then lost the next two 11-21 and 12-15.

Then the remaining pair took to the sand. It was the No. 3 pair of Katia Dizon and Emily Jensen avenging a regular season loss with a three set 21-18, 19-21, 17-15 win. It would be the only victory for the Rams against Sierra. The No. 2s of Sarah Weiby and Katelyn Viray lost 21-15 and 21-14. The No. 1s of Mikeila Banda and Haley Leifheit dropped their match 21-8, 21-11.

In the second round of action Gavilan took on Feather River College a rematch from the season opener where FRC won 3-2. Once again, the outcome was the same.  The Rams dropped the dual 3-2 ending the team competition for the program.  The No. 4 pair of Chavarria and J.Clonts came out victorious as did the No. 2 team of Weiby and Viray. The Weiby/Viray match was actually headed for a third set, when based on the other matches; Feather River clinched a dual win and forfeited the remaining set to allow their team to prepare for their next match against Sierra College. The other three pairs from Gavilan dropped their matches. The scores for the Feather River match are currently not available.

Sierra College would go on to win their duel with Feather River, to advance to the CCCAA State Championships. For the Rams the team season is over however their No. 1 pair of Banda and Leifheit and No. 3 pair of Dixon and Jensen will participate in the Nor-Cal Regional's Pairs Tournament this Friday at West Valley College starting at 9:00 a.m. A trip to the CCCAA State Pairs Tournament will be on the line in the double elimination tournament where one win qualifies a team to the State finals.
