Saratoga, CA – The Gavilan College Beach Volleyball team opened up conference play with a double header with College of San Mateo and host school, West Valley College. The Rams ended the day with split results, losing to West Valley, while defeating College of San Mateo.

The opening match of the day was against the Vikings of West Valley. It was the No.4s and No. 5 that took to the sand first. Unfortunately for the Rams, they did not find success early on as the No. 4 duo of Jenna Clonts and Sierra Gaeta lost in straight sets 21-15, 21-16. The No. 5 pair of Karish Brooks and Camille Finley had similar results dropping their match 21-18, 21-10.  The next wave had the No. 1s, No.2s and No. 3’s playing their matches.  The No. 1 pair of Haley Leifheit and Mikeila Banda lost their match 21-12, 21-14, which would clinch the match for West Valley with those three wins. Both remaining Ram teams came from behind to win their matches. The No. 2 team of Katelyn Viray and Sarah Weiby won 14-21, 23-21, 15-4. The No.3 pair Katia Dizon and Emily Jensen also dropped the first set but won the next two to win 16-21, 21-15, 15-6.

In their next match, the Rams would only have to win one match to win the dual, as College of San Mateo only competed with three teams thus forfeiting the other two matches to Gavilan, giving the Rams a quick 2-0 lead. That 2-0 lead would go on to be a 5-0 sweep for the Rams. The No.1 Banda/Leifheit won their match 21-9, 21-9. The No.2 duo of Viray/Weiby came away with a 21-12, 21-9 win. Not to be out done was the No.3 team of Dizon/Jensen who won their match 21-8, 21-2.

Gavilan will head to the beaches of Santa Cruz this Friday to take on Foothill College and host Cabrillo College. All matches will be played at Main Beach just on the other side of the board walk. Matches start at 1:00 p.m.
