Volleyball Schedule Revealed

Gilroy, CA – The back to back defending Coast Conference Champion, Gavilan College Volleyball team has released its 2018 schedule. This year the team will be playing 10 of their 20 regular season dates at home. It will be opposite of last year’s schedule, as the team spent most of the year on the road due to the renovations that were being done to the Bud & Jean Ottmar Memorial gymnasium. It will also be one of the hardest schedules they have ever played. Of the 24 matches they are scheduled to play; 6 opponents were conference champions, 13 qualified for the playoffs, 2 were in the CCCAA State Championship Tournament and 9 finished the year ranked in the top 25.

The champs will start the season off with a couple of scrimmages against four- year teams. The first scrimmage will take place August 17th against CSU Monterey Bay. The Rams will have a chance to see their former setter and AVCA 1st Team All-American, Erica Chapa, who is now running the offense for Monterey Bay. Then on the 24th, Gavilan will head up to Oakland to take on Menlo College and Holy Names University.

The season officially kicks off on August 28th with the first of three scheduled Gavilan Classics. A three team round robin event, the Rams will take on Los Medanos College, a 2nd place finisher in the Bay Valley and playoff qualifier a year ago. Also competing will be the Vikings of West Valley College who just had their best season under the current coaching staff, which included a playoff appearance.

The team then hits the road to take place in the Solano Classic on August 31st. Here the Rams will face the College of the Siskiyous and host Solano Classic. Solano is the defending Bay Valley Conference champions, and a playoff team from a year ago.

September 5th will be the date of the second Gavilan Classic. This time perennial NorCal powerhouses Sierra College, the defending Big 8 champion which finished last year ranked 9th in the State, and Fresno City College the reigning Central Valley Conference Champions for 10 years straight, who finish 10th in the final state will participate.

The difficult schedule continues as they will take part in the toughest NorCal volleyball tournament on September 7th and 8th at the Delta College Classic in Stockton. There 16 teams will face of in the two day tournament which features 5 defending conference champions and 8 playoff qualifiers from a year ago.

Back home on September 19th, the Gavilan will take on City College of San Francisco in a Coast Conference Cross Over. The Rams from San Francisco finished 2nd in conference play and the two team have split the last four times they have faced each other.

 On September 21, the Rams will head down to Southern California to play two matches against teams they have never faced at any point in the history of the program. First, they will play San Bernardino Valley followed by host Victory Valley College who last appeared in the playoffs in 2014.

 Back home from SoCal, Gavilan will take on a new look Cabrillo College at home on the 26th   in the last of the two Coast Conference Crossover matches.  This will be the first time the two teams will play each other since longtime coach Gabby Neville stepped down.

Just two day later at home on the 28th, Gavilan will begin Coast Conference South play against De Anza College. The two teams split their two games last year as both teams shared the conference championship.

 The very next day will be the 3rd and final Gavilan Classic as Shasta College and Folsom Lake College will play in the three-team classic. Folsom Lake was a third-place finisher in the Big 8, that played their way into the CCCAA State Volleyball Championships. They finished the year ranked 6th in the State.

 October begins the end of all preseason games and a run of 11 straight Coast Conference games. It will be Canada College at home on the 3rd.  Then it will be San Jose City College on the 5th in San Jose. The following week will see Foothill College coming to Gavilan on the 10th and Ohlone College hosting the Rams on the 12th.  On the 17th, the Rams will host first year program Las Positas College which will mark the end of the first half of conference play.

 October 24th will be the second match up against De Anza College in Cupertino. Two days later in Redwood City, Canada College will be hosting the Rams. Then it will be the return of former assistant coach Jason Dupler and his Jaguars of San Jose City College on the Tuesday the 30th.

 November will see Gavilan play their final three games of the regular season. First it will be Foothill College on the 2nd in the Los Altos Hills. Then on the 7th on sophomore night, the Rams will play in their final home game against Ohlone College. The final game of the year will take place on the 9th as the Rams will play their first ever match at Las Positas College in Livermore.

 November 20 will be the date of the 1st Round match of the CCCAA NorCal Regional Playoffs on a Tuesday night. Saturday the 24th will be the date of the 2nd round of the CCCAA NorCal Regional Playoffs. The CCCAA Sate Championships will take place over three days staring on November 30 through December 2nd. The championships will be hosted by Bay Valley Conference and will be played at Solano College in Fairfield, CA.
