Gilroy, Ca – The task at hand was simple, but not easy, for the Gavilan College Men’s Basketball team, win. Win like they have all year long. Twenty-two times this season they have done just that. It is the most amount of wins the program has had since 1983. So why on sophomore night, playing their last regular season home game of the year against a team they have already beat twice this season, against Head Coach Dallas Jensen’s coaching mentor- Coach Percy Carr, would this game be any different. How about a 49-year-old drought, that would end if they could just win one more game. In 1969 the Rams’ basketball team won their only Coast Conference Championship and no team in the last 20 years have been close to ending that drought. That was the task that was at hand for the 11 Rams as they took the floor at Bill Christopher Court, win and become immortal, forever remembered as the team that achieved and ended the drought or lose and become just another team like the many that came before them.

Monica Jr with the put back slamEarly on in the game, the Rams seemed to feel the pressure, trailing the Jaguars by 5 or more through out the first 10 minutes of the half. While they appeared nervous, San Jose City looked confident, blocking multiple close-range shots from the Rams. They also threw down two dunks, one which left the rim swaying for some time after. Then two things happened that changed the course of the half and the game. First and most importantly Brian King Jr got hot from behind the arc. So hot that he ended up with 21 first half points, all of which were 3-point shots.  Then with the Rams up 29-27 with under 2 minutes to go, King Jr saw one of his layup attempts bounce of the rim and into the hands of teammate Kenneth Modica Jr, who out jumped everyone in the paint for the put back slam which signaled to every one in the gym, that order was restored and the Rams never looked back from there. They took a 37-29 lead into half time.

King Jr. for 3

It was all Gavilan in the second half, as they continued to stretch out their lead. With 15:00 minutes left in the second half they were up by 44-33. Less than four minutes later the it was 50-36 and everyone in attendance could sense that San Jose City had no answers for the Rams on this night.

Along with King Jr’s 21, the Rams had two others in double digit scoring. Takoda Bowers had a double double with 14 points to go with his 10 rebounds while Ja-Mont Wilson was one rebound away from a double double of his own going for 11 points and 9 rebounds.

With about 3 minutes left in the game and the Rams leading by a score of 65-45 Coach Jensen put in the few Rams that haven’t seen the court on this night and the celebration was on. When the horn rang out as the clock stuck zero, the score was Gavilan 76 San Jose City 57. Task accomplished.
