Call it a Come Back

Las Positas College – To start the fourth quarter against Las Positas College, the Women’s Basketball team found themselves down seventeen points, trailing 65-48 on the scoreboard. They had two options in front of them, throw in the towel and admit defeat or fight as hard as they can to the very last second a see if they can pull of a comeback for the ages. They chose option two.

Behind freshmen’s Mireya Hernandez’s 9 points and Evelyn Rios’ 7, the Rams went on a 24-7 run, highlighted by Hernandez as she hit straight attempts from the free throw line to send the game into overtime. With both team in the bonus, overtime became a free throw shooting contest, with Rios leading the way going 5 of 6 from the charity stripe. The Rams would outscore the Hawks 9 to 7 in the final 5 minutes of overtime to complete the comeback and win the game 81-79.

The Rams found themselves down 24-17 against the bigger Hawks at the end of the first quarter. It was a strong second quarter by Las Positas outscoring Gavilan 26-13 to give themselves and 18-point, 48-30 lead at half. In the third the Rams actually outscored their opponent 18-17 in the quarter as their shots started to fall.

The Rams had four players in double digits with Hernandez leading the way with 24, followed by Rios with 16 and Lizette Moreno and Cecilia Vasquez with 13 apiece. Moreno had an all-around strong game as she actually had a double double as she dished out 10 assists to go with 5 steals. Both Makenzie Barnes and McKinzie Lothrop knocked down 6 points and Barnes grabbed 8 rebounds.

The Rams are now 2-5 to start the year. They will head to Fremont on Friday Night to take on Ohlone College with tip-off scheduled for 6 p.m. Go Rams!
