Running Rams

Gavilan, CA – Behind sophomores Ibn Zaid’s and DJ Burgess’ strong scoring night, the Gavilan men’s basketball team came away with a 93-65 win against Skyline College last night.

The Rams scored early and often, highlighted by two break away dunks by Daylon Potts, as they jumped out to a lead early in the first half.  Meanwhile it was the defense that was forcing Skyline into bad shots or turnovers with their press. For most of the game, Coach Dallas Jensen was sending is whole sale subs, sometimes 5 at a time to keep fresh legs on the floor in an effort to wear down the Spartans.  It worked as Gavilan took a 50-25 lead into the first half. The second half was more of the same, but closer on the score board as the Rams only outscored the Spartans by three points, but the outcome was never in doubt.

Gavilan shot 51% from the field and hit 9 of their 27 shots from three point range which was good for 33%. Zaid led the team in scoring with 20 points, while Burgess had 19. Xander Bowers cleaned up the boards pulling in 11 rebounds, while Kuris McCoy brought in 7 of his own of the bench.  Potts had an all-around good game statistically scoring 13, with 7 assists, 3 steals, and 3 rebounds. Mrad Abrha had 8 points to lead the Rams off the bench.

With the win, the Rams improve their record to 10-1 on the year. They will take a day off before heading to Skyline College to participate in their Skyline Classic. On Friday night, the Rams will take on Las Positas College with a record of 6-1 at 3:00 pm. On Saturday their opponent will be College of the Redwoods, a team with a record of 0-10, with tip off scheduled for 1:00 pm. Go Rams!
