Tournament Champs

Monterey, CA – Behind freshman Patrick Fisher’s 15 points with help from sophomores Xander Bowers’ 12 and Deion Ellis’ 11 points, the Gavilan College Men’s Basketball team defeated Monterey Peninsula College 66-60 to win the Monterey Bay Classic Basketball tournament.

 It was a close game at half, with the Rams up only by a point and it stayed that way through out. Gavilan only shot 31.5% from the field, and hit on 4 of their 16 shots from behind the three point line. Where they did the damage was down low, inside the paint where they were able to get themselves to the free throw line 33 times. They hit 84.4% of their free throws for 28 points, while the lobos had 4 points on six attempts.

Ellis and Daylon Potts had 6 rebounds, while Bowers had 5 to go with his team high 5 blocks for the Rams. Mrad Abrha had a strong game chipping in 10 points off the bench. In fact, Gavilan’s bench outscored Monterey’s bench 31 to 13.

In the opening round of the tournament Gavilan took on and defeated College of Alameda by a score of 97-56.  DJ Burgess and Kurtis McCoy led the team with 13 points, while three others had double digit scoring nights; Chris Pugh had 12 while Ellis and Abrha had 11. It was a night when every Ram scored at least two points.

The second round opponents were the Lasers from Irvine Valley College. This time the Rams came away with a 64-54 win. Ibn Zaid had 17 points to lead the way, with Burgess 14, and Potts not far behind them with 12 and 8 rebounds. Gavilan shot 54.1% from the field and hit 5 of their 7 shots from behind the three point line.

Zaid was named tournament MVP, while Patrick Fisher was name to the all-tournament team. With the win, the Rams are now 9-1 to start the year. They will be back in action on Wednesday night as they host Skyline College at 6 p.m. at the Bud and Jean Ottmar Memorial Gymnasium. Go Rams!
