Six Rams Honored

Gavilan, CA – Six members of the Gavilan College Football team received honors from the coaches of the American- Golden Coast conference. Two Rams, Corey Garcia and Richard Just were name 1st team all-conference, while four others, Alec Calderon, Cameron Castro, Cecil Murphy and Donny Torres received honorable mentioned.

Garcia a sophomore psychology major from Santa Teresa high school in San Jose put up huge receiving numbers this year for the Rams. Playing in nine of the team’s ten games he caught 76 passes for 1059 yards and 5 touchdowns. His season high in catches was 15 against College of the Redwoods, while against Hartnell he had 168 receiving yards. He finished the year 3rd in the State in receptions, 10th in the State in yards and 5th in the state in yards per game.

Justo is a sophomore liberal arts major from San Benito high school in Hollister who played on the defensive tackle for the Rams. Playing in 6 games this year, he recorded 35 tackles, 19 solo, 4 for a loss along with two sacks.

Calderon is a freshman kinesiology major from also from Santa Teresa high school. A defensive back, he finished the year with 53 tackles, 40 solo, 4 tackles for a loss and 3 interceptions.

Castro is a sophomore liberal arts major who hails from Pacheco high school over in Los Banos. He led the team in tackles this year with 67, 36 were solo, 5 for a loss, 1.5 sacks, a force fumble and two fumble recoveries.

Murphy is a sophomore child development major from Andrews high school in Andrews South Carolina. He was one of a few Rams that played on both offense and defense side of the ball. Offensively he had 21 rushing attempts for 60 yards and a touchdown. He also caught 5 balls for 54 yards, kicked a 22 yard field goal and converted 12 extra points. As if that wasn't enough he also had 2 completions for 37 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, he had 41 tackles, 37 solo, 1 tackle for a loss, and one sack. He forced 1 fumble while recovering one whit intercepting 4 passes.

Torres is a sophomore kinesiology major from San Benito high. Playing defensive back, he recorded 41 tackles, 33 solo, 1 sack, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovery and 1 interception.
