Call Them Butter

Gavilan College – It was a good week that got better for the basketball teams of Gavilan College. With both teams recording victories earlier in the week, they looked to continue their winning ways this past weekend, and that is just what they did. The men’s team came away with two wins at the Skyline College Classic, while the women’s team was victorious on the road against Ohlone College.

Having already played earlier in the year, Gavilan and Ohlone decided to play each other once again after a team on both of their schedules had to drop out. Just like last time the Rams came away with double digit 62-46 win.

They jumped out to a 21-point lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back. In fact, it was a 17 point that the Rams took into the half. Sophomore Jessica Curto had a team high 22 points with freshmen Lizette Moreno and Evelyn Rios chipping in 14 and 10 points. Curto had a big game inside as she pulled down 15 rebounds while Cecilia Vasquez had 10. Vasquez was one point away from a double double as was Rios who was short one rebound.

 They improve their record to 3-5 as they prepare to host Los Medanos College on Friday night, tip off schedule for 5:00 pm.

The men’s team took on Las Positas College in their first game of two at the fore mentioned Skyline College Classic. It was a one-point lead for the Rams in the first half, which eventually became a 92-82 win. They shot 50% from the field and 44% from three. Five Rams ended up with double digit scoring with DJ Burgess’ 24 the team high, followed by Ibn Zaid’s 22 and Patrick Fisher’s 15. Despite only scoring 4 points Daylon Potts but found other ways to contribute as he had 14 rebounds, 10 assists, 2 steals and a block.

In game two of the classic the opponent was College of the Redwood, but it was all Rams all the time as they took a 14-point halftime lead and pushed it to a 48-point margin in a season high output of 117 to 69. Six different Rams had double digit scoring performances, four of them coming off the bench. Deion Ellis had a double double with a team high 19 points and 10 assists, while Xander Bowers had 18 points and 7 rebounds and Kurtis McCoy finished with 17 points. The Rams shot 55% from the field and hit 10 of their 28 3-point shots good from 35%.

They are now 12-1 on their and along with San Francisco City College have the greatest number of wins in the state. They will take this the week off, before taking on Ohlone College on Thursday December 20th at 7:00 pm. Go Rams!
