Fairfield, CA – The Gavilan College Volleyball team had two games to play last Friday while taking part in the Solano Volleyball Classic. The opponents for the day were host Solano College and Napa Valley College. It became very apparent throughout the day that the only thing that could slow down the Rams was the traffic outside, as Gavilan came away with wins in both matches.

In the first match, the Rams took on host Solano College. It was a straight set victory for Gavilan as they won the match 25-20, 25-18, 25-18. It was a showdown of middles, as Solano’s best player Destiny Greenwood does her damage from the middle. But she was no match for the twin towers the Rams have as Evelyn Clonts’ 11 kills and Camille Finley’s 9 kills led the way  offensively. Kieley Hoskins had 25 assists, while Greysen Gilroy had 10 of her own. Mikeila Banda had the high in digs with 9 while Clonts also led the team in blocks with 3.

In the second match of the day, Gavilan breezed to a 25-9, 25-14, 25-8 victory over a young Napa Valley squad.  Sophomore Lex Chavarria (San Benito H.S.) had a team high 8 kills while freshman Charlotte Cannizzaro (Venice H.S.) chipped in with 7. Freshman Melissa Zanotto (Central Catholic H.S.) ran the show while handing out 11 assists. Defensively, it was freshman Noel Chavarria (San Benito H.S.) with 7 digs leading the way.

The Rams are now 4-0 to start the season. On Wednesday they will host the Gavilan Volleyball Classic #2, where Sierra and Fresno City come to town. It will be an early season showdown between some of the best teams in Northern California. Gavilan will take on Sierra at 1 p.m., followed by Sierra and Fresno City at 3 p.m. and in the final match of the day Gavilan will face Fresno City and 5 p.m. Go Rams!
