2 Games, 2 Wins

Gavilan, CA – The two time defending Coast Conference Champion Gavilan College Volleyball team began the 2018 season by hosting a three team classic with Los Medanos College and West Valley College on Wednesday afternoon. After the whistles were done ringing in the Bud and Jean Ottmar Memorial Gymnasium, the Rams came away with a pair of wins.

Up first was the Mustangs of Los Medanos. Gavilan quickly jumped out to an 8-0 run to start the game and never looked back, winning the match by a score of 25-13, 25-15, 25-16. Offensively the Rams were led by sophomores Evelyn Clonts (Gilroy H.S.) and Kaitlyn “Juice” Viray (Christopher H.S.) who had 8 and 6 kills. Freshman setter Kieley Hoskins (San Benito H.S.) handed out 14 assists while sophomore Greysen Gilroy (Monte Vista Christian H.S.) finished with 7. Clonts was the leader in the block category with 7, while sophomore Mikeila Banda (Notre Dame Salinas) and freshman Teresa Ochoa (North Salinas) had 7 digs a piece.

In the final match of the day the Rams took on a West Valley team that they had battled to a five set win a year ago. This year it didn't take that many set as Gavilan once again came out victorious in straight sets by a score of 25-22, 25-17, 25-18.  In all three sets the score were tied at 12, but late runs pushed the Rams to a win. This time it was Ochoa who led the team with 8 kills, followed by three others with 6. Included in that group was sophomore Camille Finley (San Benito) and the fore mentioned Clonts and Viray. Hoskins had 20 assists to go with her 6 digs. Banda was the dig leader with 11 followed by Viray with 9 and Gilroy with 7. Clonts and Finley had an even 4 blocks each to the Rams.

The Rams are currently 2-0 and will travel to Fairfield to take part in the Solano Classic. Gavilan will take on Solano College at 3 p.m. and then take on Napa Valley College at 5 p.m. Go Rams!
