New Look Rams

Gavilan College – If the 2018 Gavilan College Soccer team looks different than it did last year, there is a good reason for that. Head coach Ricardo Espinosa overhauled the roster which now has fifteen freshmen. There is a new assistant coach, Michael Perkins who also serves as the head coach of the Pacheco High School Soccer team in Los Banos. Even with all the new faces, expectations are high as Coach Espinosa feels this is his best team he has had in his tenure. In the season opener against Foothill College, the new look Rams didn't disappoint, as the team fought to a 1-1 tie.

It didn't take long to recognize that something was different in the Rams as the held their composure and took control of the game early on. It was in the 30th minute, that Gavilan was rewarded for their effort as Brandon Valtierra found the back of the net.

Rams on the attackThe second half was more of the same with Gavilan controlling the pace and shutting down any attack Foothill could muster. Then with 10 minutes left in the game the Rams had a bit of bad luck. With Foothill attacking deep in Rams territory, Gavilan took a foul inside the box, which awarded the Owls with a penalty kick. The Owls took advantage and scored on the kick to event the match at one apiece. Despite two scoring chances by the Rams in the waning moments of the match, one which required the opposing goal keeper to make a great save, and the second just hitting the outside of the far post, the game ended in a tie.

The performance of the Rams was not a surprise at all, in fact is all part of the plan than Coach Espinosa put together last spring and summer. See Coach Perkins wasn't the only one to make their way over to Gavilan College from the Los Banos area. Ten players, of which all are freshman are from the other side of the pass. Eight of them were part of Coach Perkins back to back league championship teams from Pacheco. All of which helps with the early cohesion the team has showed in their first match despite the experience the team might have playing at the junior college level.

The Rams will look to get their first win of the young season on Friday as they travel to Kentfield to take on College of Marin. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. Go Rams!
