Football releases 2018 schedule

Gavilan, CA – First year Head Coach John Lango has officially released the 2018 Gavilan College Football schedule. Optimism is high for Coach Lango, who is starting his second stint as the leader of the program, as is the rest of his staff as they prepare for the upcoming season.

The Rams will play an even ten games this year, five at home and five on the road. Three of those games will be out of conference games, with the remaining game being played within the American Golden Coast Conference. Four of the ten opponents the Rams will face this season had a winning record last year, with all three teams playing in a bowl game. Within conference play, three teams finish conference play with a .500 record or better.

The season kicks off on September 1st on the road as Gavilan takes on Los Medanos College up in Pittsburg at 6:00 pm. The Mustangs finished second in their conference last season and finished with a 9-2 record. They are ranked 25th in the State in the preseason poll.  They were 29-28 winners of the Living Breath Foundation Bowl.

A week later on the 8th of September the Rams have their season opener against the College of the Redwoods, a 2:00 p.m. start that will take place at Gilroy High School. Redwoods finished last year 2-8, fifth in the American Pacific 7 Conference.

Back on the road the following week, Gavilan travels to Cupertino to take on De Anza College, in an American Division Crossover game. A 1:00 pm kick off is expected there.  The Dons finished last year with a 2-8 record, ending up in fifth place in the National Bay 6 Conference.

September 22nd has the Rams back at home will open up conference play against defending conference champions, Monterey Peninsula College. The lobos finish last year with a 7-4 record but more importantly, 5-1 conference play earning a trip to the NCFC American Division Championship Bowl. In the 2018 preseason poll, they are among a group of the teams outside of the top 25 that received votes.

The final game in September has Gavilan traveling down highway 101 to take on Hartnell College on the 29th with a 6:00 p.m. start. The Panthers finished the year 5-5 but played strong during conference play finishing the year with a 4-2 record.

The first two Saturdays in October are both home games for the Rams. First on the 6th the Owls from Foothill College come to town. With a 7-3 record from a year ago, Foothill finished 3rd in the American Pacific 7 Conference. The following week on the 13th, Reedley College stops by for a visit. Reedley finished 4-6 and 2-4 in Golden Coast Conference play.

On October 20th, the Rams will travel to Aptos to take on Cabrillo College, with a 6:00 kickoff.  Cabrillo went 1-5 in the Golden Coast and 2-8 overall.

The home finale will take place on November 3 against San Jose City College. The Jaguars won two games last season with one of those taking place within the conference.

The final game of the season will take place on November 10th, in Merced, as the Rams take on Merced College. Merced finished the year in second place last season with a 9-2 record and 5-1 in conference. As a reward, they received a bid to the fore mentioned Living Breath Foundation Bowl.

As a reminder all of Gavilan’s home games take place at the Garcia/Elder Sports Complex at Gilroy High School and are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. kickoffs. Admission for adults is $8, sophisticated adults over the age of 55 and those with military card get in for $6. Students of any age/school with a current school I.D. card get into games for free.
