Saratoga, CA.- The Gavilan College volleyball team knew going into their match against the Vikings of West Valley, that they were going to have their hands full, and that’s exactly how the match went. It was a 2 hour and 20 minutes, 5 set slugfest which ultimately found the Rams on the winning side of the scoreboard, 25-15, 20-25, 24-26, 29-27, 15-10.

In the first set, the Rams came out on fire hitting .429 or in other words had 13 kills and only 1 hitting error. Kaitlyn Viray led the way with 4 of her match high 9 kills in the set. Four different Rams also recorded an ace from behind the service line.

In the second, the hot hitting quickly cooled with West Valley jumping out to a 5-11 lead. It ballooned to a 11-20 lead when the Rams started to show a few signs of life. It was Lex Chavarria coming off the bench with back to back kills forcing a timeout from the Vikings that got Gavilan back on track. The lead was too much to overcome but it was game on from there.

It was back in forth in the third as each team took a turn going on runs. With the Rams trailing 6-8, West Valley went on a run 9-3 to get the score to 9-17. Then led by Dizon, Viray and Chavarria the Rams were able to go on 9-3 of their own to get the score to 18-20. Back and forth it went with the scoreboard showing 24-24, a missed serve by the Rams followed by an ace from the Vikings gave the set to the home team.

In the fourth set the two teams continued where they left off. This time it was the defense that came through for Gavilan. Camille Finley had 3 blocks with Evelyn Clonts and Dizon teaming up together to record two blocks as well. The team had 19 digs from 5 different Rams which helped slow down the West Valley attack. In probably her best set as a Ram, Dizon came up with 5 huge kills to help propel the team to a two-point set win at 29-27.

Keeping with the theme of the match it was 7-8 West Valley as the teams switched sides for the final time in the 5th.  Clonts came up with 2 blocks and a kill down the stretch to help the Rams go on a run of to take the lead 11-8. Then it was simply a kill from setter Christa Arroyo, a block from both Clonts and Arroyo followed by an ace from libero Mikeila Banda that gave the Rams the 15-10 victory.

Gavilan now finds themselves with a 7-1 record as they head south this weekend for two days to participate in the L.A. Pierce Classic. The Rams will face Bakersfield College currently ranked 3 in the State on Friday night. Other team participating are Grossmont College ranked 4th in the state, host L.A. Pierce 8th in state and 13th ranked Butte College.
