It has been a week of hard fought matches for the Gavilan College Men’s Soccer team. The team played four matches, two at home and two on the road and came away with a 1-3 record. The Rams had victories over Merritt College, while falling to Ohlone College, College of Marin and Folsom Lake College.

First up on September 12 on the Renegades home field, the Rams came up short losing 2-1 in a defensive struggle to Ohlone College. Finding themselves down 2-0 Effrin Pineda headshotat halftime, the Rams looked for a second half comeback however, it was not in the card for the Rams as they were only able to come up with one goal. That goal came from Efren Pineda (Gilroy H.S.) unassisted in the 90th minute. Goalie Cesar Lopez (Gilroy H.S.) saved 3 of his 5 shots he faced. Gavilan took only 5 shots themselves, 4 being on goal.

Playing in their second home match of the young season on Thursday September 14, the first being a 3-2 win over Shasta College, found the match tied 3-3 with the clock running out. Then in the 90th minute it was Sophomore Sean Kaufman (Gilroy H.S.) scoring his second goal of the match to win it for the Rams. Johnnie Rojas (Christopher H.S.) and Pineda from Kaufman scored the other goals for Gavilan. Goalie Cesar Lopez (Gilroy H.S.) faced 11 shots on goal saving 8 of them.

The next day the Rams once again found themselves in a highly competitive match. This time the opponent was College of Marin. Gavilan quickly found themselves down a goal after the 1st minute of play only to score in the 3rd minute to tie the match. It was freshman Isaiah Ruggerio (Christopher H.S.) with an unassisted goal. After going down 1-2, it was Brian Huerta (Salinas H.S.) unassisted in the 64th minute scoring the equalizer. Unfortunately, this was the last goal the Rams would score and in the 80th minute Ohlone would go on to score the winning goal.

After a long drive, up to Folsom to face the Falcons, it was the Rams who tallied the first goal of the match. It was Pineda scoring with the assist going to Daniel Alvarez (Live Oak H.S.). From there in was three straight goals for the home team giving Gavilan a 1-3 loss. Alvarez came up with 12 saves of the 15 shots he faced.

Gavilan currently find themselves with a 2-5 record on the year. They will be hosting the 1-4-1 West Hills-Lemoore College on Friday in their match before heading into conference play. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
