The Clonts Effect

by Sep 28, 2017

Pittsburgh, CA.- After a harsh 1-2 road trip down south, the Gavilan College Volleyball team righted the ship by winning both of their matches at the Los Medaños College Classic. It was a pair of straight set victories against Shasta College, 25-19, 25-19, 25-11 and College of San Mateo 25-19, 25-19, 25-14. With the pair of wins, the Rams improve their record to 10-3.

In their first match of the day, it was middles Evelyn Clonts and Camille Finley leading the way offensively with both recording a team high 7 kills. Jenna Clonts contributed six kills of her own with setter Greyson Gilroy handing out 21 assists. Libero Mikeila Banda finished with a team high 15 digs. The rams got off to a slow start hitting 0.00% in the first set, but found some rhythm as the match progressed, hitting .133% in the second set and .370 in the third set.

Despite having five Rams hit in the positive, there was one Ram that stood out beyond all others in the final match of the day against College of San Mateo. That name belongs to Evelyn Clonts. Once again, she led the team with 9 kills the most she has hit in her young career, with a hitting percentage of .600. However, it was her 9 blocks that stole the show. She ties the record for blocks in a single match with that effort. The record was set two weeks ago in the 5-set victory over West Valley College by fellow freshman Camille Finley. Haley Leifheit has 8 kills of her own, with Arroyo giving out 17 assists and 10 digs while Gilroy put in 11 assists of her own. Finley scored 3 aces from behind the line and Banda led the team with 14 digs.

The Rams have wrapped up the preseason portion of their schedule. Next week it will be a pair of road game to open up Coast Conference play. First up will be a meeting with former assistant coach Jason Duple and his San Jose City College Panthers. Then on Friday, it’s a trip up north to Fremont and a match with Ohlone College. Both matches a scheduled for 6:30 p.m. GoRams!!
