A Nice Weekend

The Gavilan College volleyball team overcame a hard fought defeat in the opening round of the prestigious Delta College Classic to finish with three straight victories to finish 3-1 on the weekend. Of the 16 teams participating in the two day tournament 11 made the playoff last season.

In the opening round match on Friday, the Rams took on Santa Rosa Junior College. After winning the first set 25-23, Gavilan would drop then next three sets 14-25, 22-25, 18-25. In the match, the Rams struggled to put the ball away against the best defensive team at the tournament. Kaitlyn Viray led the team with 8 kills and 23 digs, Katia Dizon was next best Ram offensively with 5 kills. The entire team only hit .063 for the match. Christa Arroyo dished out 14 assists with 15 digs of her own with Greyson Gilroy coming with 10 assists of her own.

The second match of the day found Gavilan facing Shasta College. It was a clean three set sweep for Gavilan wining the match 25-19, 25-18, 25-18. This time it was Sarah Weiby who finished with a game high 10 kills, but Viray was not far behind with 7. The big story of the match however was the defensive effort at the net of middle Evelyn Clonts who had 7 blocks, 6 of them solo. Arroyo had 12 digs to go with her 21 assists.

Kaitlyn To start day two of the tournament, the Rams found themselves taking on Hartnell College. The last time these two opponents faced off was in the 1st round of the 2016 NorCal playoffs, where Gavilan won in straight sets. Despite both times having more new faces than a year ago, it was still more of the same with a three set sweep for Gavilan; 25-8, 25-21, 25-17. The offense finally showed signs of life with the team hitting .205. Seven different Rams recorded a kill with Weiby once again in double digits with 10. Jenna Clonts came back to the middle to record 5 kills and 6 blocks. Arroyo who ran the show from the setting position had 20 assists, 10 digs and 2 kills. The defense was led by Dizon with 13 digs.

In the finished the day and the tournament with the same team they started the season with, Solano College. All though the Rams did come away with a 20-25, 28-26, 29-27, 25-23 victory, this time around the match was a slug fest with both teams putting on a show offensively. Viray had the match of her young Gavilan career with 20 kills on 59 swings with only 6 hitting errors. If that was not enough she also had 9 digs and an ace. Weiby had 9 kills and Hailey Leifheit came in off the bench to spark the offensive with 6 kills on 16 swings. Libero Mikeila Banda had a career high 22 digs. Another career high would go to Arroyo with 52 assists. That's a mark that only two other Rams have ever achieved.

With their effort this past weekend the Rams improve their record to 5-1 on the year. The 2017 Gavilan College Volleyball Tour across California continues Wednesday as they go visit Monterey Peninsula College. First serve is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
