Cupertino, CA- There is now only one team sitting atop the Coast Conference South standings after last night and that team is Gavilan College. They were able to go on the road in front of the biggest crowd they have seen all year and silence that crowd by winning the match in straight sets 25-23, 25-19, 25-14.

It was back and forth early in the first set as both teams were trying to get a feeling for each other. Gavilan had a lead at 14-12 until De Anza went on a 6-0 run to take the lead. Then Evelyn Clonts’ kill seemed to spark the Rams and end the Dons’ run. It was Gavilan’s turn to answer back as Sarah Weiby had three straight kills to tie up the score. From here both teams would take turns swapping the lead until the score said 23-23. A De Anza serving error followed by a hitting would give the Rams the set.

In the second set, Gavilan came confident and on fire offensively.  They had 12 kills with no hitting errors led by Leifheit and Weiby who had 3 kills apiece. In fact, the Rams hit .522% as a team compared to the first set where they only hit .054% which was in large part due to 9 hitting errors. A 5-1 lead grew to 11-3 which further expanded to a 20-10 lead. The Rams maybe relaxing a little allowed De Anza to go on two mini-runs to get the score to 24-19. But that was as close as they would come as Camille Finley’s block forced De Anza into a hitting error to end the second set.

The Rams hitting would cool off a little in the third with amassing 13 kills with 3 errors causing their hitting percentage to go down to .357.  If De Anza had any thoughts of and epic comeback if front of their home crowd, Clonts made those thoughts quickly fade away by dominating the set. She had 3 devastating kills to go with 4 highlight reel blocks leaving no doubt as to who was going to win the match.

They Rams had three hitters Clonts, Leifheit and Weiby who had 8 kills from Christa Arroyo’s 21 assists and Greysen Gilroy’s 11. Defensibly, Clonts led the team with 6 blocks while Arroyo and libero Mikeila Banda had 7 digs.

With the win, the Rams improve their record to 13-4 and 3-0 in conference play. The Rams will have their last two road matches of the regular season at Cañada College and Foothill College next week to end their traveling road show. Then its home sweet home for the Rams as they will have four weeks of nothing but home matches.
