Aptos, CA- Going into last night’s game, the Gavilan College Volleyball team knew in order to pull an upset of the #2 ranked team in the state, they would have to play a perfect match. For most of the match they were playing close to perfect, but close would not be good enough as the Rams fell in three sets to Cabrillo College 2-25, 10-25, 23-25.

The last few matches the offense came out early setting the tone, this time it was the defense’s time to shine. In the first set alone 7 different Rams recorded digs, and as a team they had 26 digs, slowing down the high octane attack of the Seahawks. It was Jenna Clonts and Katelyn Viray leading the way with 3 kills with Haley Leifheit chipping in with 2 kills to help the team go back and forth on the score board. However, with the score tied at 20, Cabrillo went on a 5-0 run to close the set.

The second set was a bad dream for the Rams. With the score at 4-6 a combination, of hard serving and maybe an emotional letdown after dropping the first set, led to a 19-6 Seahawk run to quickly put away the sets. The Rams only had 3 kills and the defense was only able to come up with 10 digs.

Gavilan used the time between sets 2 and 3 to regroup and they came out firing.  Sarah Weiby and Katia Dizon came out quickly with 2 kills apiece to get the Rams an early 7-3 lead. Back and forth the two teams went with when Cabrillo down 12-10 went on a 9-3 run to take control of the set.  It was kills from Clonts and Dizon that would start a run for Gavilan to even the score at 23 all.  Then it was a kill and an ace for Cabrillo that would seal the match and give the win to the Seahawks.

Offensively for the Rams, Viray, Clonts and Weiby led the team with 4 kills apiece. Leifheit and Dizon followed with 3. Christa Arroyo had 12 assists with Greysen Gilroy handing out 10 of her own. Dizon had 16 digs with Mikeila Banda contributing 9 from the libero spot.

The Rams will now look to a Friday night road game in Cupertino against De Anza College. Both teams a currently tied atop of the Coast Conference South Division. First serve is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
