Gavilan College (18-8, 8-2) 25 15 22 16 - 1
Delta College (22-4, 14-2) 23 25 25 25 - 3

Stockton, CA- The season ended for the Gavilan College volleyball team last night in the first round of the NorCal Regional Playoffs, falling to Delta College in four sets, 25-23,15-25, 22-25, 16-25.

Playing on the road, which they are more than used to after this year’s schedule, the Rams came out firing in the first set. They had 10 kills with only 4 hitting errors.  It was Katia Dizon’s 4 kills that set the tone early. Defensively, Evelyn Clonts and Camille Finley led the way with their blocking as they shut down the All-American hitter for Delta College early and often in the first set.  A late run by Delta help close the score gap the Rams had throughout the set to tie the score at 23, but a kill from Finley and block by Clonts that gave the set to the Rams.

The second set got away from Gavilan pretty quickly as Delta go off to a 16-6 run to start the set. Unlike in the first set, the Rams had trouble putting the ball away recording only 6 kills while amassing 8 hitting errors. More trouble than the hitting errors for Gavilan was their lack of ability to cleanly pass the serves coming from the Mustangs. This would be a major thorn in the side of the Rams throughout the remainder of the match.

In the third, the offense was able to right themselves, as Evelyn Clonts’ tallied 3 kills, with Jenna Clonts and Haley Leifheit getting some rhythm of their own with 2 kills apiece in the set. At the net, Gavilan was able to slow the two-headed monster attack of Delta with 5 blocks. Mikeila Banda’s 6 digs and Katelyn Viray’s 5 digs contributed to a close set. A kill Jenna Clonts found the Rams trailing 21-22. Then it was a questionable in/out call that gave Delta a 21-23 lead.  A block by the Clonts sisters seemed to make up for it, but ultimately a miss served and hitting error by the Rams gave the set to the Mustangs.

In the fourth, Gavilan traded points with Delta before taking the lead at 8-5 and 12-9. But an 8-0 run led by strong serving from the Delta libero and continued serve receive troubles for the Rams, put them down 12-18. A 4-2 Gavilan run was capped by a Jenna Clonts kill delivered by Banda got the Rams a close as they would come to wining the set at 16-20. Delta would finish the match with a 5-0 run, to win the set and match.

Offensive the Rams were led by Evelyn Clonts 9 kills and Leifheit’s 8 kills. Greysen Gilroy had 17 assists. Finley had 5 blocks to led the defensive effort with Evelyn Clonts recording 3 blocks of her own. Banda had 17 digs with Viray contributing with 12 of her own.

All though the Rams were not able to achieve their main goal of getting back to the state tournament, they finished the year with a 18-8 record playing 21 of their 26 matches on the road. The most road wins by any Gavilan Team. They won a 5th Coast Conference title, repeating that feat, only the second time that has happened in the history of the program. For the 8th straight season, they qualified for the NorCal Regional Playoffs, a school record. The Rams will take a month off to prepare for their finals as they finish the semester. Then its suntan lotion, flip flops and sunglasses as they get ready for Beach Volleyball season in their newly built beach volleyball facility.
