Queens of the North

Saratoga, Calif.- Twenty three pairs entered the 2017 NorCal Individual Tournament this year. On the line were eight tickets to the CCCAA State Individual Championship Tournament as well as the title of the best in Northern California. At the end of a long day at West Valley College it was the 2nd seeded pair from Gavilan of Madison Hartman and Valerie Rodgers that was left standing as Champions on the North.

The sophomore duo clinched their ticket to the state finals after defeating a pair from Feather River College. From there it was two straight victories against a pair Cabrillo and West Valley before finally winning the tournament defeating a second Cabrillo team. With the victory the pair of Rams will be the number 1 seed from the North, the 2nd seed overall in the CCCAA State Individual Championship. This was the first time for pair from Gavilan College won the NorCal Individual Tournament. This will be the second trip to the State Tournament for Rodgers and the first for Hartman.

Gerard and Borja Celebrate

Hartman and Rodgers were’t the only Rams to find success in the sand. The 13th seed pair of Sophomore Courtney Borja and Freshman Claire Gerard also found themselves getting their ticket punched to the CCCAA

A Individual Tournament. The pair defeated a team from Sierra the 20th seed overall before taking on the top team from Sierra the 4th seed pair. It was a hard earned 3 set victory for the duo. It will be the first trip to the finals for Borja.
The Rams also qualified a third pair to the NorCal Individual Tournament, Sophomore Erica Chapa and Freshman Haley Leifheit. The team went into the tournament as the 6th seed overall. However, they were unable to get past the pair from Feather River College, ultimately losing in straight sets.

The State Individual Tournament will take place at West Valley College on Saturday at 10:00 am. Only the first and second rounds will be played on Saturday. The Quarters, semi-finals and the finals will take place on Sunday.
