Gilroy, Calif.- Behind  freshman pitcher Madison Gutierrez-Urban’s (San Benito H.S.) two hit performance on the mound,  the Gavilan College Softball came away with a 11-1 game shortened victory over the visiting Dons of De Anza College. Gutierrez-Urban pitched all five innings giving up only one run, with one strikeout. She improves her record to 8-17 on the year.

She was aided by the Rams offense that put up the 11 runs in just two innings. The scoring started in the bottom of the 2nd, with back to back singles for Elena Dozal (San Benito H.S.) and Keely Castro (Christopher H.S.) who each drove in a run. Then with two on it was Isha Gonzalez (San Benito H.S.) who doubled in both runners to take a 3-0 lead. Gonzalez would go on to score on a wild pitch.

After a quick 3 up 3 down shut down inning from Gutierrez-Urban in the top of the 3rd, The Rams hitters continued to put runs on the board.  After an error led to Monica Padilla (Leigh H.S.) scoring, it was a replay of the previous inning as Dozal, and Castro each had RBI singles. Then Gonzalez hit her second double of the game, scoring Dozal. Jackie Orta (Live Oak H.S.)  brought home Castro with an single of her own. After a walk to load the bases, Sara Rickard (San Benito H.S. ) doubled bring home Orta and Gonzalez. Gavilan would go on to get 2 more hits in the 4th but ultimately was not able to bring in any runs leaving 3 on base.

In the top of the 5th, De Anza scored their only run of the game with a two out triple followed by a RBI scoring single.  However, that would be all the Don’s would be allowed to do as the next batter would ground out giving the Rams the victory.  It was their 5th time this season Gavilan won by achieving the run-rule margin.

The Rams improved their record to 11-22 and 3-7 in Coast Conference Play. Gavilan will take the next week off for Spring Break before hosting Hartnell College on Tuesday April 11.
