Facilities Upgrade

by Aug 1, 2017

A new chapter in the history of Rams athletics at Gavilan College is currently being written, as a major facilities improvement project is underway to the school's Athletic Complex. Work on the swimming pool and gymnasium has already started. Upgrades to the baseball field and softball field are expected to start within the next few weeks. Also on the schedule to be completed include the construction of a beach volleyball complex and a creation of a plaza that will be located between the baseball and softball fields.

After celebrating its 50th anniversary of instructional, intercollegiate, and community use, the Bud and Jean Ottmar Memorial Gymnasium is undergoing renovations which include the installation of a new gym floor, bleachers, and men’s and women’s restroom facilities. This state of the art flooring system, manufactured by Robins Floor, is currently being used by the following clients:

  • 15 of 30 NBA Game Floors including Lakers, Wizards, Magic, Pacers and Cavaliers.
  • NCAA Game Floor Installations Including; Duke, Indiana University, UCLA, UConn, UNC, Kentucky and Michigan
  • NBA practice courts including; Cavaliers, Lakers, Spurs, Pacers, Bulls, Magic, Pelicans, Hornets, Timberwolves and most recently, the Brooklyn Nets!
  • Coming Soon: Gavilan College

The project is expected to be completed in October, just in time for the finish of the volleyball season and the start of the 2017-2018 basketball season.

Swimming Pool Complex

The $2.3M renovation to the swimming pool complex will upgrade the original pool that was built in 1967 and will provide services to the both the Accessible Education Center as well as the Department of Kinesiology and Athletics. This state of the art facility will also accommodate possible expansion of the intercollegiate program by offering a competition pool for sport of women’s water polo. Expected completion is early August 2017.

(Expected completion date for January 2018)

Later this summer, the baseball field will also experience renovations.  Current plans include replacing of the existing dugouts with a single story dugout with teams rooms attached, both for visiting teams as well as the Rams; scores booth; new mesh net backstop; stadium lights; sound system; paving; and equipment storage.  The softball complex has been renovated within the last 12 years, but improvements will also be made within this facility.  Those areas include new mesh net backstop, relocation of score booth, dugout fencing, paving, and sound system.

To enter this facility, Rams Fans will gain access through the Rams Courtyard.  This area will house the Rams softball team room, public restrooms, and a mini athletic training room.

After just three short years of existence, one of the Rams’ most successful teams will have new facilities which will allow them to practice and compete on campus.  In this area, located behind right field of the softball stadium, four (4) beach volleyball courts will be constructed.  As the first college in Northern California to host women’s beach volleyball as an intercollegiate sport, this state championship caliber program will continue its winning ways with this championship facility.
