Gavilan College Vice President of Administrative Services has announced his retirement, effective December 29, 2012. A resident of Gilroy, Keeler has served at Gavilan College since April 1999. He submitted a letter of resignation to President Steve Kinsella and the Gavilan College Board of Trustees on October 15, which reads, in part:
"After much discussion, Gail and I have decided to retire sooner rather than later....From a personal perspective, our house sold faster than anticipated, we have the resources, and there are a number of other things we both would like to get involved in. From a professional perspective I am leaving a district and mission I deeply care about, and still wake up every day with a considerable amount of, some would say too much, enthusiasm. To that end I will offer whatever I can to make the transition as smooth as possible.
"I am especially proud to have served in an organization lead by a Board and Superintendent/President that is guided by a high level of ethics and moral responsibility ...."
Keeler and his wife Gail will be moving to be closer to their children and grandchildren. "I'm hoping to travel, read, garden, and volunteer in an effort to give back to the community; I am also looking forward to taking the love I have for my wife to another, higher level, " he said.
As VP of Administrative Services at Gavilan College, Keeler has overseen a division that includes Business Services, Human Resources, Facilities and Maintenance, MIS, and Campus Security. He was instrumental in the planning and implementation of the renovation work at the Gilroy campus made possible by the Measure E bond measure that passed in 2004. He has chaired a number of important district committees, including the Budget Committee, the District Technology Committee, and the Health, Safety, Facilities, and Grounds committee. Keeler served as past president and current treasurer for both workmen's compensation and property and liability Joint Powers Authorities; As Gavilan College's Equal Opportunity Officer, Keeler handled complaints and investigations for the district. Keeler said he is very "appreciative of all the support I've always gotten from the staff in Administrative Services."
Superintendent / President Steve Kinsella said "It has been a pleasure to work with Joe Keeler. He has brought a high level of professionalism, expertise, and commitment to his work at the college, and has managed numerous critical, high-profile projects. I wish him a relaxing and well-deserved retirement."
The college has not yet determined whether or when the position will be filled. Due to state budget cuts, Gavilan College has convened an Expenditure Reduction Task Force, and is examining each vacant position. The college will conduct an internal review of the skills of existing personnel and determine whether it is possible to reassign the vice president's functions elsewhere in the organization. The salary range for the position is $104,477 - $146,531 per year. The decision will ultimately be made by the Gavilan College Board of Trustees.
Keeler has a B.S. in Business Administration, a Masters in Human Resources Management, and a CPA license. Prior to joining the administration at Gavilan College, Keeler held positions for a county board of education, and at K-12 schools, and served for five years in the United States Air Force. He is a member of the Gilroy Rotary.
