WHO: Gavilan College Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS) and CalWORKs , with the help of the EOPS Club,
WHAT: is sponsoring Adopt a Student’s Family for the Holidays, to help those students who are not only attending college, but who are also low-income parents. Students were asked to submit an application, which was reviewed by staff, in order to select families to adopt based on need: financial, living and family situation. Eight families were selected for "adoption" and gifts are also needed for an additional 32 children of all ages. We plan to provide gifts for each child (ages 1 to 17), groceries and gift cards for the families and anything that may add to the festivities of a joyous holiday season which they may not have been able to celebrate otherwise.
Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS) is a state-funded student support services program for students who are economically and educationally disadvantaged. Our goal is to increase access, retention and transfer of students with social, economic, and educational challenges. EOPS offers academic counseling, educational planning, priority registration, orientation, student success workshops, university fieldtrips, and book vouchers in order to facilitate student success.
CalWORKS is California's cash-aid program for needy families. Gavilan College is a partner in this program, which assists CalWORKs participants at the community college while they prepare for employment. The college provides education, employment training, work-study and support including child care and transportation assistance. The goal of the program is for students to increase their wage earning power and to become economically self-sufficient. A counselor/advisor is available to work with the student to develop an educational and employment plan that addresses immediate as well as long term goals.
WHY: The EOPS/CalWORKS program has a tradition of providing gifts for all of their students’ children, which has proven to be more challenging every year. This year we recognize the special hardship of many of our student-families, and hope to provide additional support.
HOW: Donations to gift packages for these families and children are needed. We appreciate any donations by December 9, 2011. Gifts will be presented to the families on December 15, 2011. For more information, please contact Lucy Olivares at 408-846-4904.
