WHAT: is offering a Veterinary Assistant training course. Students will learn how to assist Veterinarians and Veterinarian Technicians in their daily tasks. Students will learn proper handling and procedures for examination of pets for signs of illness, disease, or injury through practical training. Instruction includes legal, ethical and professional standards as well as nutrition basics for animal care. Also covered are hygiene and sterilization techniques used for laboratory and surgical equipment as well as maintenance and management of a veterinary setting. This training is appropriate for those seeking employment in veterinary practices, laboratories, animal hospitals, shelters and clinics. This course combines 35-hours of classroom instruction with a recommended 24-hour externship to provide you with a complete learning experience. (Total – 59 Hours). Upon successful completion graduates will receive a certificate of completion.
Class Instruction: 35 hours over 5 weeks. The externship component requires students to volunteer their time (24 hours). Each student will be responsible for coordinating his/her externship.
Course Fee: $1,099 includes textbooks, course materials and certificate of completion. Financial assistance is available through Sallie Mae Financial in partnership with Boston Reed College.
Prerequisites: Minimum 18 years of age and high school completion or its equivalent. Admission to the Veterinary Assistant certificate program is open to any interested student who is proficient in keyboarding, has a basic understanding of a word processing computer program (Microsoft Word recommended) and has a command of English grammar and punctuation. No veterinary office work experience is required. Students will be required to have access to the Internet, printing capabilities and an email address. An English pre-assessment test will be administered on the first class meeting to assure student success. Prior to placement in an externship, students will need to show proof of computer proficiency and submit a resume.

WHY: Starting pay for Veterinary Assistants is $10 – 15 per hour. Pet owners are becoming more affluent and more willing to pay for advanced veterinary care because many of them consider their pet to be part of the family. This growing affluence and view of pets will continue to increase the demand for veterinary care and cause the field to grow faster than average through 2018.
