The exhibition Francisco Franco: Educational Travels chronicles the journey of an artist from California?s Central Valley, to Modesto Junior College, to the University of California, Berkeley, to the New York Academy of Art?and beyond. Works from each era are included to allow the viewer to experience the struggles and triumphs of a creative journey.
Franco?s more recent work, four large 4 X 5? canvases, explores social tolerance as its central theme. These portraits of a Native-American, African-American, Mexican-American and Asian-American are painted using words identified by the person who?s portrait is painted; these words are superimposed layer after layer until a striking likeness of the subject is achieved--a true testimony to patience, skill and insight.
As part of an educational institution, the Gavilan College Art Gallery strives to provide its community with cultural and educational exhibits?this exhibit accomplishes both. It reveals a story of an artist that shows a path traveled through our culture, but perhaps most revealing, a path of learning Art through higher education.
