WHO: Students who will be starting at Gavilan College in Summer or Fall 2010
WHAT: Must complete a New Student Orientation before meeting with a counselor for registration assistance. Orientation session will demystify questions common to new college students, such as
* What are the expectations of college students?
* How do I plan for my education goals?
* How do I prepare to transfer to a 4 year college or university?
* How do I know if my classes will transfer?
* Where do I get help when I need it?
WHEN and WHERE: In-person orientation sessions are scheduled from April through August. Sessions are offered days, evenings, and even weekends, in Gilroy, Morgan Hill and Hollister. If none of the in-person sessions are possible, online orientation is also available. for a list of scheduled orientation sessions, an online registration form, and links to English and Spanish online orientations, go to http://www.gavilan.edu/orientation/
WHY: In the past, orientations were strongly advised, but not required. However, research has shown that attending orientation significantly increases new students' chances of succeeding in college. Orientation provides new students with the opportunity to become familiar with Gavilan College, its programs and services, degree options, policies and expectations, and much more! Whether students plan to transferring to a four-year university or are on a career path, there are important things they need to know before they begin. Those who complete orientation have an easier introduction to college and move toward their goals with more confidence and in a reasonable amount of time. Students who would like assistance with the registration process at Gavilan College must complete the New Student Orientation prior to meeting with a counselor. Students who complete the orientation also become eligible for priority (early) registration as continuing students.
