Gavilan College students join thousands in Sacramento for March in March
Sixty Gavilan College students and eight staff members (on vacation time) boarded a bus at 6:15 this morning to join 13,000 other protesters in a march from Raley field to the state Capitol building. The bus, funded by the Gavilan College Associated Student Body, is expected to return the marchers to the Gavilan College Gilroy campus at 5 p.m.
The goal of the rally is to communicate the importance of higher education in California, and to ask the legislature to refrain from making further cuts. Community Colleges Chancellor Jack Scott will address the crowd.
State funding for higher education was reduced in 2009-2010, reducing class offering, and raising fees. Gavilan College was forced to cancel Winter Intersession classes, reduce hours of service in the tutoring Center, Outreach, and other student services, and cancel the annual GavFEST open house for the community.
