WHO: Gavilan College Board of Trustees
Keynote speaker: Elder Gerald E. Harris, founder of Bethany Community Church and adjunct faculty member at Hartnell Community College.
Alumni speaker: Juan Chapa, co-founder and President of International Sales of ESMG World (Entertainment Sport Management Group,) and former Gavilan Rams football player
WHAT: Will be awarding 493 degrees and certificates will be awarded to the 2009 graduating class. These include 247 Associate of Arts degrees, 72 Associate of Science degrees, 125 Certificates of Achievement, 8 Awards of Achievement, and 41 Certificates of Proficiency. Some graduates are receiving more than one award.
The program will begin with a processional as president Steven M. Kinsella leads the Board of Trustees, Administrators, Faculty and Class of 2009 down Sycamore Lane, across the campus bridge, and into the gymnasium.
Jovana McGraw, Student Trustee, will lead the Pledge of Allegiance and graduating student Graciela Nutter will sing the National Anthem. Dr. Kinsella will introduce the ceremony, and Associated Student Body President Hanna Kempis will welcome family and friends.
Guest Speakers include Elder Gerald Harris, who will deliver the Keynote Address, and Alumni speaker Juan Chapa.
Math Instructor Ken Wagman will present Faculty Scholarships to outstanding students Instructor and Rho Alpha Mu advisor Hope Jukl will welcome nine Rho Alpha Mu graduates into life membership in the state honor society. They are: Thomas Borzene, Veronica Calderon, Nayeli Ceja, Iris Delgado, Francisco Gil, Micheal E. Grace, Jr., Steven Hamilton, Rudy Silva, and Jennifer Underhill.
Deb Smith, President of the Gavilan College Board of Trustees, will present an honorary degree to Leonard Washington, who recently retired from the Gavilan College Board of Trustees following 20 years of service.. Vic Krimsley, Vice President of Instruction, will present the Outstanding Scholar Award. Dr. Kinsella will then confer degrees and certificates, assisted by Faculty-of-the-Year honorees Kaye Bedell and Kimberly Smith.
The Cosmetology club will serve as Student Marshals, leading the graduates in the processional. The marshals will be: Melissa Castaneda, Jessica Naranjo, Ayisa Abdul-Malik, and Leonora Lopez. The Associated Student Body will host a reception directly after the ceremony in the Student Center for all of the graduates, staff, and their guests.
Admission to graduation is invitation-only due to limited seating.
