Gavilan College Instructor Sue Dodd named SCOPE Educator of the Year

GILROY, CA - Susan Dodd began her teaching and coaching career at Gavilan College in September of 1976. Over 30 years career she made a lasting impression on not only her students, but faculty and staff as well. Today accolades came from her peers throughout the state. Susan Dodd has been recognized by the State Community College Organization of Physical Educators (SCOPE) as the 2007 SCOPE Educator of the Year. Dodd and four other instructors from around the state will be honored at an awards ceremony to take place in April.

Ron Hannon, Director of Athletics called the award "an incredible honor." His letter of nomination for Dodd's award stated "Her passion for teaching and connecting with her students is evident every day in the classroom. It doesn't seem to matter what it is she's teaching…just give her someone that wants to learn, and she'll take care of the rest."

Dodd was originally hired to start up three women's athletic teams and she coached each one in addition to teaching in her first year. Over the next 16 years, she coached at least one sport every year including women's volleyball, basketball and softball. During the 80's she worked as the men's tennis coach for two years and in 1979, even filled in briefly as the head football coach. She has served the Physical Education & Athletics Department as the athletics director on three different occasions. In 1979, during her first stint as director, she was only one of two women overseeing an athletics department in the California Community College system. She has served as the department chair for the Physical Education Department for the past 13 years.

Dodd is also active in the community. She has been a member of the Gilroy Tennis Club ever since she moved to town 30 years ago. As a member of the club, she has volunteered as president, vice president and treasure, and has volunteered with the club at the Garlic Festival each year. She has also been the chair of the Garlic Tennis Tournament on four different occasions. In 1986, she was recognized by the Women's Fund of Santa Clara County, receiving a Woman of Achievement award. She also received a Courageous Leader award from Gavilan College's Board of Trustees in 1997. In 1997-98, she was honored by her peers as Full-Time Teacher of the Year at Gavilan College.

SCOPE is an affiliate organization of the Community College League of California's Commission on Athletics. It's purpose is to maintain the highest standards possible for community college physical education programs.
