Is Biotechnology in your future? Experts Discuss Trends and Ethics during Weekly Seminar

WHO: Gavilan College offers a new course for anyone interested in exploring the field of Biotechnology.

WHAT: "Seminar in Biotechnology" (BIOT 104) will host speakers from organizations including Charles River Laboratories, Genetech, Sakata Seeds, STA Laboratories, Syngenta Seeds, and TEKnova. The semester will provide an overview of trends and careers in the biotechnology industry.

"Although biotechnology is frequently in the news, not many people understand what these companies do," said Rey Morales, biology instructor at Gavilan College. "This seminar class provides a unique opportunity for students to learn about the field from experts and decide if a career in biotechnology is for them."

Employment in biotechnology, defined as the application of living organisms or their products to enhance the human condition, has been growing by around 10% annually in the Bay Area. Demand locally is anticipated for animal technicians, laboratory and manufacturing technicians, and quality control specialists. In addition to the biotechnology industry, those with biotechnology training are employed in laboratories in environmental testing, forensics, and plant pathology. BIOT 104 is transferable to California State Ujniversity.

WHEN: This one-unit class will meet on Tuesday evenings from 6:307:30 p.m. beginning February 6 and running through May 22.

WHY: "Seminar in Biotechnology" is part of a new Certificate of Achievement in Biotechnology being offered by Gavilan College. Students and community members interested in exploring occupations in this field are encouraged to enroll in BIOT 104.
