San Benito County Community Spirit Awards to be presented this week

Gavilan College is pleased to announce the winners of the 2006 Community Spirit Awards for San Benito County. The awards will be presented at the annual Holiday Mixer at the Briggs Building in Hollister., Wednesday Decembr 6 from 5:30 - 7 p.m. The award presentation will begin at 6 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.

Community Spirit Awards were created in 1999 through Board Resolution 739, in order to promote and recognize service to the communities Gavilan College serves. A representative
committee of the campus community reviews nominations and selects the award winners. Anyone may nominate an individual, organization, or business in the community for an award. In all, three sets of awards
are given out annually, in Morgan Hill. in Gilroy, and in San Benito County.

Individual: Jeana Arnold

"Jeana Arnold is a resident of Hollister. Her list of San Benito County community service, volunteerism, and public recognition includes: Co-chair of the SBC leadership Council, SBC Philanthropy Day honoree, American Cancer Society Relay for Life event Chairperson for two years, during both of which they exceeded the event fundraising goal, Relay for Life Sponsorship chair, Daffodil Days Corporate coordinator, member of the Hollister rotary, leadership San Benito fundraising Committee, Citizens' Action Council for the Hollister School District, Chairperson for the Hollister Downtown Association Street Festival, founding member of Hollister Women in Business, President and Vice President of LeTip of San Benito County, and a founding member of the SBC Chamber Ambassadors.

Business: Damm Good Water

"Damm Good Water is a locally-owned and very community involved business. They are members of the Water Quality Association, Pacific Water Quality Association, San Benito County Chamber of Commerce, San Benito County Farm Bureau, San Benito County Contractor's Association, and Hollister LeTip. They have supported numerous community groups with donations, including Boy Scouts of America, United Way, San Benito County. Adam and John Damm have served as San Benito County Cub Scout Day Camp Director, San Benito Youth Leadership Training Director, San Benito County District Committee Vice-Chair, Monterey Bay Area Council, Vice President for District Operations, San Benito County President of the Board, San Benito Community Collaborative Leadership Steering Committee, San Benito County Leadership Board Member, San and President of Hollister LeTip"

Organization: SHARP (Specialized Hollister Activities and Recreation Program)
"SHARP is a nonprofit organization established to support recreation programs for people with disabilities. A team of wheelchair athletes, the Hollister Free Wheelers has been a primary recipient of SHARP's fundraising efforts. The Division II team has been the National Champion four of the past six years at the annual three-day tournament. SHARP raises about $20,000 each year to bring the athletes to this tournament. Thanks the SHARP, many of the athletes have made a name for themselves in the wheelchair soccer community. Over 30 indivudlas have participated on this team, many of whom had never had the opportunity to play team sports before. Over the years, players have set personal goals for themselves including careers, travel and higher education. The sport has given them a sense of self and confidence and a sense of community."
