2006 Community Spirit Awards to be presented in Morgan Hill




WHO:


Individual: Dr. Jon Hatakeyama

Jon is a Morgan Hill dentist who has given a tremendous amount to his
community. He was the founder, cofounder or leader of the following
groups and initiatives: of Teachers Aid, which solicits money and
materials for classroom needs, the South Valley Wine Auction, which
benefits the running programs at the middle school and high schools
and was recently expanded to include Gilroy and Hollister, South
Valley Service Group, which works through the Japanese Community
Center to raise money for scholarships, Morgan Hill Library Advocacy
Group, Santa Clara County Water District Percolation Pond =96leading an
effort to get this area open to the public. Dr. Hatakeyama was a
volunteer in all of these efforts for the community.


Business: Johnson Lumber

=93Johnson Lumber Company has been in business in Morgan Hill since the
1970=92s. Originally owned by Keith Johnson, his son Mike inherited the
business and continues to give excellent service and many
contributions to the community. Johnson Lumber has contributed to
every nonprofit organization that has asked for help, including being
a long-time sponsor of the Friday Night Music Series, Live Oak Grad
Night, MH rotary functions, MH Historical Society, Centennial Morgan
Hill, leadership Morgan Hill, MH Chamber of Commerce. Johnson Lumber
has been a constant in the Morgan Hill community and has never asked
for recognition.=94


Organization: the Morgan Hill Youth Advisory Committee

The YAC serves as the prominent voice representing the youth in the
Morgan Hill Community. As a group of dedicated teenagers, YAC focuses
on tending to the recreational and leisure needs and interests of
young people from adolescents to young adults. Over the last year, the
YAC worked on four major events: the 4th Annual Cultural Dance Show,
the first Senior Citizen Ball bringing two generations together, a
Youth Leadership program, and the ROOFLESS Free Teen Band Concert.
They have also adopted the beautification of the Morgan Hill Skate
park. These volunteers have more events planned for the coming year,
and are doing an outstanding job encouraging youth to be part of the
community.


WHAT: Will be recognized with Community Spirit Awards, presented by
the Board of Trustees of Gavilan College. The awards were created in
1999 through Board Resolution 739, in order to promote and recognize
service to the communities Gavilan College serves. A representative
committee of the campus community reviews nominations and selects the
award winners. Anyone may nominate an individual, organization, or
business in the community for an award. In all, three sets of awards
are given out annually, in Morgan Hill. in Gilroy, and in San Benito
County.

Last years winners in Morgan Hill were Jennifer Tate, Friends of the
Library, and Associated Concrete.


WHEN: Thursday, October 5, 2006, at the Morgan Hill Chamber of
Commerce breakfast., 7:30 a.m. - 8:30 a.m..
