$60,000 in scholarships will be awarded to Gavilan College students

WHO: The Gavilan College Educational Foundation and Gavilan College Office of Financial Aid

WHAT: Will award over $60,000 in over 100 scholarships to Gavilan College students. The awards will be presented at the Annual Gavilan College Awards Ceremony.

WHEN: Thursday, May 8, 2003 6 p.m. - 8 p.m.

WHERE: In the Gavilan College Student Center, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd., Gilroy

WHY: As a demonstration of commitment to and belief in students, Gavilan College administers a scholarship program which recognizes and rewards individual merit, leadership, and potential. Although a California Community College education remains one of the most affordable in the nation, many students struggle to pay for tuition, fees, books, and living expenses while they are going to school. Gavilan College students have access to three forms of financial assistance to help them pay for college: loans, need-based grants, and scholarships.

Gavilan College scholarships are provided by community donors through contributions to the Gavilan College Educational Foundation, and awarded through the Gavilan College Office of Financial Aid. Some are established as memorials, others to provide educational access for challenged or underrepresented students. Each scholarship has different criteria, usually determined by the donor.

Six new scholarships of $500 will be awarded this year, contributed by The Gavilan College Foundation. The largest single scholarship to be awards is the Karl S. Pister Leadership Opportunity Program from UC Santa Cruz, which provides $20,000 over to years. The second highest awards is $10,000 over two years for a student transferring to CSU Monterey Bay.

"I want to thank all of the individuals, families, and organizations that have contributed so generously to scholarships for our students," said Audren Morris, Director of Financial Aid. "It has been our experience that students selected to receive a scholarship approach their degree objectives with a renewed burst of enthusiasm, a renewed commitment, and an invigorating energy to carry out their dreams."

Morris said that scholarships are an important component of the financial aid mix ."In some cases it has made the difference for a student -- whether or not they could afford to continue with their education. Scholarships make it possible for students to concentrate on their studies, by working fewer hours. This increases their chance of transfer and success. Scholarships also help to reduce student's debt load, so that they are able to start in their careers more easily. Aside from the financial help, scholarships let students know that the community cares about them, that their futures are important. Many scholarship donors have told us that they themselves were scholarship students, and that they want to help other students as a way to give back.""
