Campus Under Construction: Groundbreaking for Measure E

WHAT: The Groundbreaking Ceremony marks the start of construction for
Measure E projects on the Gavilan College main campus in Gilroy. The
ceremony will feature remarks from Gavilan College President Steve Kinsella,

Assembly member John Laird, and President of the Gavilan College Board of
Trustees, Tom Breen. Signage explaining the Measure E projects will be
unveiled, and tractors will be used to move the ceremonial shovelfuls of

WHEN: 5 p.m. - 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, September 12

WHERE: Main walkway, Gilroy campus: 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd, Gilroy

WHY: The $108 million Measure E facilities improvement bond was passed by
the voters in March 2004. In addition to land purchases in Coyote Valley and

San Benito County, the bond calls for improvements to the existing campus in

Gilroy. these improvements include technology upgrades, infrastructure
upgrades, safety improvements, access improvements, and modernization of
campus buildings.

During Fall, 2006, the campus boilers will be replaced, and trenching will
take place along the main campus walkway for infrastructure work, including
new underground electrical and gas piping. Later in the semester, trenching
will occur on other parts of campus, and portable buildings will be brought
online to serve as interim housing for departments displaced during the
following phases of campus renovation. The entire campus project is planned
over approximately seven years. Safety fencing is already in place to to
keep students and staff separated from construction areas.
