New Gavilan College faculty will bring diversity of knowledge and experience

GAVILAN COLLEGE, CA - This Fall will give students the opportunity to study with a number of new full-time faculty members in a range of disciplines. Five represent new faculty positions and the remaining three are filling positions vacated through retirement.

"I'm just delighted that we're getting a greater full-time presence in the arts and social sciences" said Fran Lozano, Dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences. "In addition to their dedication to teaching undergraduates, they'll bring new ideas and energy to the college. It's a group of dynamic, exciting people." The addition of full-time faculty is not only felt in the classroom, but in increased out-of-class interactions, office hours, and support for students.

Gavilan College is pleased to introduce:

Maria Amirkhanian, Music Instructor (mamirkhanian@gavilan.edu)
Dr. Amirkhanian is leaving a position at California State University in Fresno to begin this full-time position at Gavilan College, where she has taught on a part-time basis in the past. Amirkhanian is a recognized pianist who has delighted audiences in the annual Bach to Blues concerts at Gavilan College. In 2006 she coordinated a Piano Competition for local youth. Amirkhanian has a Doctorate in Piano/Performance from Moscow State Conservatory, Moscow, Russia.

Jessica Hooper, English Instructor (jhooper@gavilan.edu)
Ms. Hooper has been a part-time instructor at both Gavilan College and Evergreen College. She brings specific training and expertise in teaching college reading skills, and an MA in English from San Jose State University.

John Lawton Haehl holds Bachelor Degrees in English and Theatre from UC Berkeley, as well as a Ph.D. in Theatre from UC Davis. John has taught courses in costume design and theatre at UC Davis, The Sewing Workshop in San Francisco, and Solano Community College. An award winning designer, John has designed for theatre productions around the Bay Area including UC Berkeley, UC Davis, Solano Community Theatre, Napa Valley Repertory, the San Francisco Actors Ensemble and SRT (Santa Rosa Junior College). This year he has received a nomination for an Elly award for his designs in Disney's Beauty & the Beast. John has also been nominated for 5 Arty Awards for his work with Solano College and Solano Youth Theatre.

Rey Morales, Biology Instructor (rmorales@gavilan.edu)
Mr. Morales has taught part-time at both Evergreen Valley College and Gavilan College. He brings skills in working with students, local knowledge and experience, and a network of contacts in education, industry, and biotech. He earned an MS in Biology from CSU Hayward (now CSU East Bay.)

Carlton Oler, PhD, Psychology Instructor (coler@gavilan.edu)
Since 2004, Dr. Oler has been Associate Professor of Psychology & Counseling at Alabama A&M University, teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and at Oakwood College in Huntsville, Alabama (where he had earlier taught from 1994-2000.) Prior to that he worked as a Clinical Psychologist at the Weems Community Mental Health Center, Meridian, MS, as a Postdoctoral Clinical Psychology Resident, Department of Psychiatry, Kaiser Permanente Medical Center, Oakland, CA. His experience also includes years in private practice and numerous clinical settings.

Johanna Stewart, Counselor/ASB Advisor (jstewart@gavilan.edu)
Ms. Stewart has been a part-time counselor at Gavilan College. In her new role she will continue to counsel students, and will also serve as advisor to the Associated Student Body student governance organization. She holds an MA in Counseling Education from San Jose State University.

Dana Young, Technology Librarian (dyoung@gavilan.edu
Ms. Young has been a part-time librarian at Gavilan College. Her concentration will now be library technology, and helping students conduct research using the internet and electronic databases. She has an MLS degree in Library Science from Texas Woman's University.

Liana Wexler, ESL Instructor (lwexler@gavilan.edu)
Ms. Wexler is an experience instructor in English as a Second Language, with experience in Milpitas Unified School District, Gavilan College, and community settings. She holds an MA degree in Linguistics from San Jose State University.
