105 scholarships to be awarded at Annual Scholarship Ceremony

WHO: New, continuing, and transferring college students

WHAT: Will be presented with over $41,000 in scholarships at the Annual Gavilan College Scholarship Ceremony. A total of 105 scholarships will be awarded. The ceremony provides a chance for scholarship recipients to meet their donors, and for both to be honored. Some scholarships are perennial, others are given less frequently. this year, several new scholarships will be presented:

1.) The Jimmy Hirasaki Memorial Scholarship, established by Martin Cheek and endorsed by the Gilroy Historical Society in memory of Jimmy Hirasaki who was a founder of our local Gilroy garlic industry. Mr. Hirasaki was among the first to grow garlic commercially in the South Valley.

2.) Cash for College Program Scholarships: Six scholarships for $1,000 each were awarded to one student from each of the six Cash for College Workshops which the Financial Aid Office held this past spring at our main campus, MH/Hollister Sites, and 3 high schools (Gilroy, Live Oak, and San Benito). The CA Cash for College Program and the CA Student Aid Commission have donated these scholarship funds across CA. The Gavilan College Joint Community College District students will receive a total of $6,000 for Cash for College Scholarships.

3.) T.J. Owens Humanitarian Scholarships - Two scholarships of $250 each will be presented in memory of T.J. Owens, retired Vice President of Student Services for Gavilan College, and member of the board for the Gilroy Unified School District.

WHEN: Friday, May 12, from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m.

WHERE: Gavilan College Student Center, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd., Gilroy

WHY: Scholarships are administered by the Gavilan Colege Office of Financial Aid as a component of a comprehensive Financial Aid program that also includes grants and loans. Scholarships funds are set up through the Gavilan College Educational Foundation. Donors may choose to make their grants need-based, merit-based, program-based, or awarded at the discretion of the Office of Financial Aid. for information on contributing a scholarship contact Ken Berry at (408) 846-4936.
