Tickets selling fast for Bach to Blues 2006

GILROY, CA - Tickets for Bach to Blues 2006, Friday February 24, can still be purchased at Porcella's Music in downtown Gilroy, at the Gavilan College Bookstore on the Gavilan College main campus, or by phone at (408) 846-4973. A limited number of tickets will be available at the box office on the night of the performance. Tickets are $30 for V.I.P. seats, $15 for general admission, and $10 for seniors/students.

In 2005, Bach to Blues at Gavilan College sold out and inspired a renaissance in the Gavilan College Music program. This year, tickets have been selling briskly since December, leaving fewer than 100 tickets available two weeks before show time.

"If anyone has been thinking about getting tickets for Bach to Blues and hasn't done it yet, they should move quickly, because they're selling fast," said Fran Lozano, Gavilan College Dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the coordinator of Bach to Blues. "We believe there will be some tickets available for purchase at the door, but clearly the majority will be sold in advance."

Following the 2005 show, community member Tim Filice was inspired to become a supporter of the Gavilan College Music Department. He donated the funds for a concert grand piano (which will be used during this year's concert) and established the First Annual Marian Filice Youth Piano competition in memory of his mother, an accomplished pianist and popular local music teacher. The Filice family then became the first contributor to the Rudy Melone Fund for Music and the Arts, intended to stimulate the arts by building the Music Department at Gavilan College. The Gavilan College Board of Trustees was also inspired to strengthen the music program by hiring an additional full-time faculty member for the department. Pianist Maria Amirkhanian will join the faculty in 2006. In addition to teaching, Amirkhanan will continue to produce music events and performances for the community.

Billed as "an extraordinary musical experience," Bach to Blues is a benefit concert that raises money for music education at Gavilan College through a showcase of the talents of faculty and former and current students. This year's show will feature performances by Maria Amirkhanian, John Garcia, Art Juncker and the Gavilan College performance ensemble, Sandra Marlowe, The South Valley String Quartet, Nate Pruitt and Primary Colors, and Trang Bui, the winner of the First Annual Marian Filice Piano competition.
