WHO: Jewish, Muslim, Palestinian, Arab, and Israeli artists have created works in response to the stalled peace process in the Middle East. The local South Valley Islamic Community, Congregation Emeth (the Jewish community for the South Valley), and Gavilan College Art Department, History Department and Stand Together Group have collaborated to bring this exhibit to the South Valley.
WHAT: The Piece Process 3 is a stunning, nationally-recognized exhibit first shown at the ARC Gallery in Chicago in September 2002. It will be exhibited locally in conjunction with a seven-week Sunday afternoon dialogue series, Art for Peace: Dialogues for Change, that will explore shared and divergent perspectives and hopes among Muslims, Jews, and others in our community.
WHEN: Opening Reception with Artists' Talk will be Sunday, September 11 at 4 p.m. This will be followed by programs on successive Sundays at 4 p.m. unless otherwise noted:
September 18: Islam and Judaism: An Exploration of the Sacred Shared.
September 25: What Everyone Needs to Know about the Middle East for Successful Dialogue-- Stereotypes, Assumptions, and Terminology.
October 2: How 9-11 Impacts Jews, Muslims, and Everyone Else in the South Valley.
October 9: Keeping the Faith: Jews and Muslims in the South Valley.
October 16: Models of Peace-making Success.
October 23: Closing Reception and Plans for Future Collaboration, 4:30-7:30, including Ramadan Iftar. RSVP to this reception appreciated: 848-4724.
WHERE: Events from September 11-October 16 will be at Gavilan College Art Gallery. The final reception on October 23 will be nearby at the Gavilan College Student Center. Gavilan College main campus address is 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd., Gilroy
WHY: The artists hope that their work can help create a space in which dialogue can take place, and in which understanding may flourish. The local groups wish to start a dialogue based on respect, religious pluralism, and inclusivity. The South Valley Islamic Community and Congregation Emeth also wish to demonstrate that their congregations not only can co-exist in peace, but can successfully collaborate and cooperate.
HOW: The gallery is open during regular college library hours (closed weekends). Thanks to the generous sponsorship of the South Valley Islamic Center, Congregation Emeth, and Gavilan College, all Piece Process events are free and open to the public. Parking will be free for all events.
