Gavilan College welcomes Dr. Jane M. Harmon as new Vice President of Instruction and Student Services

WHO: Dr. Jane M. Harmon. Dr. Harmon has been involved in community colleges for the past twenty-two years, first as a faculty member and then as an administrator. As a tenured faculty member in Minnesota she was instrumental in developing programs for college students with disabilities and in overseeing the first initiative of the Minnesota Community College Center for Teaching and Learning which focused on involving faculty statewide in classroom research. Dr. Harmon also served as a community college administrator at colleges in New York, southern California, and most recently at Shasta College in Redding, CA. Dr. Harmon received a Ph.D. in Educational Administration from the University of Texas at Austin where she was a Kellogg Fellow of the Community College Leadership Program. In 1999 the University of Texas at Austin's College of Education recognized Dr. Harmon as a Distinguished Graduate.

WHAT: Has been hired as Gavilan College's Vice President of Instruction and Student Services. This position, which combines responsibility for both instruction and student services, is one that Dr. Harmon is very excited about. "I believe that by bringing together these two key divisions, instruction and student services, we will not only continue to provide the quality instruction and student services for which Gavilan College is known, but also will enhance the experience for students at the college. I look forward to working with the outstanding faculty, administration, and staff at Gavilan College to continue to serve the learners of our communities," said Dr. Harmon.

WHEN: She will begin on August 1, 2005

WHERE: Her office will be in the Administration Building on the Gilroy Main Campus: 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd., Gilroy

WHY; The vice presidential vacancy was created in 2004, when two Vice Presidents, Martin Johnson and Dr. John Baker, retired. For budgetary reasons, the two vice presidential positions were combined on an interim basis. For the past year, the interim position has been filled by Sherrean Carr. In 2005, the Board of Trustees decided to keep the combined vice presidential structure for at least two more years, and to hire a permanent Vice President for the position.

Sherrean Carr will return to her prior position as Dean of Technical and Public Services, and Fran Lopez, who served as interim Dean of Technical and Public Services, will return to her prior position as Associate Dean of Disabled Students Programs and Services.
