Register now for Science Alive! A Saturday event for middle school students

WHO: Middle school students and their parents

WHAT: Are invited to participate in a day of fun and learning. This academic enrichment, Saturday event introduces middle school students (grades 6-8) to math and science through fun, hands-on activities. Students will choose workshops among such topics as: Solving Rubik's Cube, All about Worms, Polymers, Motorcycle Mania, A Cow's Eye View, Fingerprint Collection, Building Your Own Electric Motor, and more!

There will also be workshops for parents: Financial Aid: Funding for College, Preparation for High School and College - What Parents Should Know, and What's After High School. All of the parent's workshops will be offered in both English and Spanish.

The day will begin with registration at the Gavilan College Student Center, a greeting by keynote speaker Brian Conrey, professor of Mathematics at Oklahoma State University and Executive Director for the American Institute of Mathematics (AIM.) Two workshop sessions will be offered in the morning, and one in the afternoon. Lunch will be provided.

The registration fee is $10 per person. A limited number of reduced-fee scholarships are available for low-income students. Space is limited. Students are encouraged to register online at www.gavilan.edu/sciencealive. For more information, please call (408) 848-4887.

WHERE: Gavilan College Gilroy campus, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd., Gilroy, CA 95020

WHY: This purpose of this event is to encourage middle school students to think about math and science. Students who are interested in math and science can plan their high school education, taking the courses that will help to prepare them for college. Workshops for parents are offered so that parents will be able to encourage their children to prepare for higher education.

This event is sponsored by the Gavilan College Natural Sciences Department, MESA Program (Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement), Hewlett Packard Corporation, and the Gavilan College Educational Foundation.
