New programs for kids at Gavilan College this summer

WHO: Kids ages six through seventeen

WHAT: Will be able to participate in theater, sports or academic summer camps at Gavilan College this summer. Community Education Director Lynda Nolan Kerr has remade summer youth programs to offer more options and better meet the interests of young people in the community.
This summer, two sports camps will be offered: Co-ed Baseball camp will help kids from 7 - 13 years old develop and improve all their fundamental baseball sills. Campers will gain valuable skills by working with Gavilan College Baseball coaches, and Hammerhead Trathlon Camp will help kids from ages 6-15 prepare for the Bay Area's newest kids triathlon, the Hammerhead Kids Triathlon. Two one-week session are offered for each sports camp.
The popular Summer Theater Arts Repertory will also see some changes: the addition of one-week "mini-camp", and the first ever STAR camp in San Juan Bautista. Mini-camp will introduce youth to the performing arts through various theater arts and television activities. The regular sessions of STAR, which include rehearsing for and presenting a play to the community, will be offered in Gilroy, Morgan Hill, and San Juan Bautista. The Gilroy program, under new direction, will produce the fun-filled "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" on the Gavilan College Main Stage on the Gilroy Campus. In Morgan Hill, STAR campers will produce the musical "The Jungle Book," at the Morgan Hill Community Playhouse. The new STAR in San Juan Bautista will produce "A Midsummer Night's Dream" on the stage at El Teatro Campesino. As in the past, teens will enjoy STAR Video, which meets in the Gavilan College Television Studio in Gilroy.
College for Kids will return with one three-week session to be offered in Gilroy. "CFK" is a fun, educational summer program for students entering grades 4-6. Students participate in their choice of morning enrichment activities, plus sports and recreation in the afternoon.
