Gavilan College staff set to take on the Big Sur International Marathon

WHO: Over 60 Gavilan College employees, including faculty, support staff, administrators, and the college president are registered to participate. (President Steve Kinsella will be participating shortly after having completed the 40 K Boston Marathon on April 18 with a time of 3:30:19.) Steve Kinsella and group organizer Mark Friedman will run the timed marathon race. A team of five employees will participate as a relay team, over 50 will walk in the 10.6 K event, 2 will walk in the 9 mile event, and 1 will enter the 21-mile power walk. A handful of others will participate in the 5 K walk.

WHAT: Will walk or run in the Big Sur International Marathon. The Big Sur International Marathon is an annual event. Over 3,000 athletes begin this race on Highway One in Big Sur and finish in Carmel (roughly 26.2 miles.) Events include the marathon run, a relay race, a 21 mile Power Walk, and 10.6 mile, 9 mile, and 5 k non-competitive walks. The Gavilan College group will have participants in all of the events.

WHEN: Saturday, April 24, 2005 The race starts at 7:00 am and concludes by 12:30 p.m.

WHERE: The race goes from Big Sur to Carmel along Highway One, which will be closed to traffic.

WHY: Mark Friedman, Learning Disabilities Specialist at Gavilan College, was the driving force behind organizing a group for the marathon, and encouraging people as they trained for the event. He started recruiting participants back in September, and has met his goal of bringing 60 people to the event. In a recruiting email to staff, he said, "It has been rated the number one running/walking event in the nation by more than one publication. I'm inviting all Gavilan employees to consider throwing away the diets (they never work anyway) and start training for one of the events. Having a goal, especially with friends, is a great motivator and a good deal of fun. Besides it is the only day in the year when you can walk/run the cliffs of Highway 1 without worrying about traffic."

Participants have cited a number of reasons for participating, including to test themselves, to build team spirit with colleagues, to get in shape, and to have fun.
