Heading East: An Exhibit on California's Asian Pacific History,

Now through February 28, the travelling exhibit entitled "Heading East: An Exhibit on California's Asian Pacific History" will be on display at the Gavilan College Student Center, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd. in Gilroy. The exhibit coincides with the lunar new year celebrated by many Asian cultures.

Heading East is a traveling exhibit which documents the role of the Asian Pacific American in the history of the state of California. It has been exhibited around California since 1999, most recently at the San Jose International Airport.

The exhibit consists of large photographic panels and columns, with text and quotes throughout. The panels, over 6 feet tall, create an interactive space in which the viewer can experience the exhibit.

The web site dedicated to the exhibit,, states: "The overall approach of the exhibit is to expound upon the cherished values of democracy, freedom, and economic opportunity as seen through the eyes of Asian Pacific communities. The fundamental ideas suggested by each theme are evoked by discovering the words for these ideas from three sacred documents governing California: the Declaration of Independence, the U. S. Constitution, and the California Constitution. Thus Asian Pacific people are placed in the context of and its relationship to the shaping of California's 150 years of statehood."

The web site contains all of the text and photos incorporated into the exhibit. It was brought to campus by the Gavilan College Stand Together Group.
